happy potatoe planting day - woohoo! and a bunch of other odds and sods!

isn't that beautiful? you may see 24 tires...but i see 24 tires with potatoes planted in them - woohoo! the potatoes are planted and i just couldn't be happier! happy potatoe day to all!

the plastic-wrapped porch is sprouting all kinds of little seedlings! i have been trying very hard not to plant anything out too early...but i think i will start planting some stuff out tomorrow. we haven't had the temps drop to freezing for several weeks now and the 2 week forecast says the temps overnight will not go below 5C. so i am putting out the cold weather stuff.

made a monster lasagna that we ate the other night - yummeh!

had delicious hamburgers for lunch the other day - look at all that cheese!

and here's some kymberz chicken alfredo with mushroons, broccoli and cauliflower.

the beginnings of the making of some traditional style korean kimchi - i love kimchi!

of course, the Framboise Manor breakfast of champions - trouts and sprouts. we love this for breakfast and try to have it every morning. jambaloney is out fishing right now. hope he brings home a bucket full! we eat fresh sprouts with at least 2 meals a day. we love them!

and speaking of sprouts - i just received my order from a new sprout place. ever wonder what a year's worth of sprouts looks like? see below.

ever wonder what a year's worth of sprouts costs?

with shipping and taxes: $38.41

yes, you read that right. we will eat up some of these until we start sprouting our own seeds but the majority of these will go into food storage. this year i hope to try to let enough of our own veggies go to seed in order to have our own sprouted seeds for the following year. we are already sprouting our own radish seeds and they are deelish. and it's too easy to let a tire of radish flower, go to seed and then harvest them. we easily have 2 years worth of radish seed from one tire. saving seeds and then using them for sprouts - it's like a gift that keeps on giving!

  2. Kymber, I agree with Pioneer Preppy, I want one too and that lasagna (Not a piece, the whole thing!!!).
I love your tires, can't wait to here how many potatoes you end up harvesting out of the batch. Keep up with the seed saving, it's a good thing for your future.

    1. Sandy - i would send it all to you but i am sure that it would arrive in a right mess! based on all calculations from the past several years - these tires should yield about 160lbs of potatoes...and i am being incredibly conservative and have knocked off 15lbs for next year's seed. and seed saving is a passion of mine! thanks Sandy!

I just got back from the Farmers Market, and Wild Bill told me that the author of that Harmonic book has written a second one. I'll check it out to see if it's different from the first. And if it is - well it's coming too. And looking at your food pics makes me wanna take a big bite out of the screen !

Have a great week-end guys ! Will work on responses over days and days to the email. Thanks for that ... love it !

  5. Looking good in the garden! That's seriously a year's worth of sprouts? It looks like such a tiny amount! How big are those packages?

Can't wait to start doing some serious gardening here too!

    1. Wendy - it's a year's worth for two people. each bag weighs a different amount as some of the bags contain a mix of lentils and chickpeas (big seeds) and some bags contain things like brassica seeds (small). they are about the length and width of jambaloney's hand. i sprout about a table spoon of each at a time in 5 trays. the five trays will last us about 5 days eating them on top of salads or just on the side with other food. we eat sprouts with at least 2 meals a day. they are awesome! good luck out in your garden - and congrats on baby Shiloh!

  9. Why would you plant your potatoes?? We just leave ours in the bag when we get them at the store. How is jam going to keep a bucket full of fish alive?? Won't they smell when they die?? Why just leave them in the water, and swim??

  11. I love to grow sprouts. I love to make a big baked potato with cheese and chives, or sometimes with cheddar and bacon. (Or several small ones, if that's what I have.) I love to make a lasagna, either meat and cheese, or zucchini and ricotta and mozzarella. Sounds as if we are eating similar foods. Now, if I could only grow Cadbury milk chocolate bars !

    1. yes - Jane it does sound like we like the same foods! i love baked potatoes and i love them with just about anything on them! i love spinach and cottage cheese with meat in my lasagna - and tons of mozarella!!! bahahahahaha - jambaloney is out in the yard now trying to plant chocolate bars - he says he'll let you know if it works - bahahahah!

    2. If Jam finds a way to grow those milk chocolate Cadbury's bars like carrots, then I will be right up !
Seriously though, I need to give you a recipe I make sometimes for a ladies lunch.

      Spinach Cheddar and Rice Casserole

      3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
      1 med. onion, finely chopped
      3 cloves garlic, minced
1 10-ounce package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and squeezed dry (or approximate amount fresh.)
3 cups cooked instant or quick-cooking white rice, brown if you wish.
1 cup diced extra-sharp Cheddar cheese
      1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
pinch of salt and pepper (could skip the salt)
      4 large eggs

Preheat oven to 425°F. Generously coat a 9-inch pie pan with cooking spray.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and cook, stirring frequently, until beginning to brown, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and spinach; cook, stirring, 1 minute more. Transfer to a large bowl. Add cooked rice, cheese, pepper and salt to the bowl and stir to combine.
Whisk eggs and milk in a medium bowl. Stir into the spinach-rice mixture. Transfer to the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
Bake the pie until lightly browned in spots, about 25 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes before cutting into wedges.

This is wonderful with a large salad.

  12. OH, forgot to add, I would walk from Texas to your house for that lasagna, it looks AMAZING. I'll admit, I'm a pasta addict. Sigh, I could eat pasta EVERY day and I don't think I'd tire of it. Of course, my body might, ha.

    1. 1st Man - we do enjoy some good pasta. we love lasagna but one of our favourite pastas is made with spaghettini, fresh cut tomatoes, olive oil, vinegar with the mother in it, lime, coriander, parsley, tons of garlic, a dollop of honey, spinach and/or kale and green onions/chives. then add some parmesan when you serve it up. it's an easy meal to throw together and it's a powerhouse meal after a long days work! i am glad that you like pasta - i'll know what to make when you come to visit!

    1. get on those taters Russell! we try to never let ours grow more than 6inches or so before we hill them up again - makes for lots of potatoes to harvest. holy moly - your lettuce is getting ready to bolt? we have only got tiny little lettuces waiting to go out. i guess that's the difference between NS and NC eh? bahahahah!

  14. kymber... I am so happy to know your weather is nice enough to get some veggies in the ground! Your food looks yummy...especially the trout and sprouts. That is the breakfast of champions! Due to sickness I didn't get any potatoes planted this year and I already miss them. I was late planting our main garden but it is growing nicely and I just this week harvested a few tomatoes and squash this week.
