the mouse is out - woohoo!

(see my previous post about a mouse in our bed before reading this or it won't make sense)

so much for blocking the bedroom door, opening the window and hoping the little intruder would make a break for it. we were sitting at the kitchen table talking when he came pealing around the hall and under the table. jambaloney almost managed to catch him but he climbed up inside our baseboard heater!!! we quarantined the cats and moved all the chairs and got everything up off the floor and opened the kitchen door. and waited. jambaloney hunched over on his hands and knees on the floor and me sitting up the stairs to the living room. we waited some more. and some more. jambaloney noticed he snatched a crumb of something off of the floor (i am terribly embarrassed to admit that!), so we went and got him a little bowl of water and some bird seed. we put it near the baseboard heater so he could smell the food and hoped that he would duck out to get some food. he probably hadn't eaten or had any water for most of the night and all day - i hoped we could tease him out so that jambaloney could grab him and run him outside.

so we waited and waited. and then we decided to go upstairs to the living room and read. we hoped that he would come out, get food, and then run out the kitchen door. so we waited. all in all we waited about an hour upstairs and then we went searching for him. no sign of him anywhere. he wasn't in the baseboard heater nor anywhere else in the kitchen. we knew that once we let the cats out of the bedroom that they would let us know if he was still here. they have been lolly-gagging around all afternoon so we are quite comfortable that the little mouse, though probably traumatized, is at least free.

and after we strip the bed and re-make it - i will be able to sleep in it again. big sigh of relief there! whewwww!

  1. OK so due to work I am coming into this late so forgive me if this has been asked already but... Why are you not letting the cats eat him and why are you letting a piece of vermin free?

    1. PioneerP - we always free any animals/insects that we stumble upon. the cats don't eat the mice - just play with them and sometimes puncture them. these cats let squirrels run up their backs - they are not barn cats but city cats. and so we try to save any little creature that we come upon.

  2. Kathi would say, if it was a cute, movie type of mouse. Let it go. If it was a ugly mouse, trap um.

  3. Kymber, You are just like me ! When the builders were building this house, they left the front door open, and left half sandwiches in sandwich bags. When we moved in there were a couple of families of adorable field mice. I thought it would be a mean thing to kill two families just so my family could be clean and comfortable. So, we bought one of those multiple no hurt mouse traps, caught far more than we thought, and we relocated them 20 miles north, right near my husband's bosses house. Two problems solved !

    1. Jane - i would expect this of you! we catch and release, too...we just do it right out in the field out in our backyard. we don't have problems with mice or critters - they never come in the house. this one was probably brought in by barrel.

bahahahahah! did you really drop them off near your husband's bosses house?

      xox my friend!

  4. Kymber - Yeah ... little Wilbur lives ! I name every mouse I have ever seen in the house or outside Wilbur. We used a catch and release type of trap last year when we had a little visitor in the basement. Peanut butter lured him in and then I set Wilbur free in a large field. I watched as he scurried away to explore new territory.

With such an action packed day, you'll sleep well tonight my friend, and hopefully no more little Wilburs anytime soon ! xoxo

    1. oh dear Helga - thank you for an idea for a name for them! we only have field mice and voles around here - they aren't like city mice at all and if they smell humans or cats they stay away. i am glad that you used a catch and release trap.

yep - we had an action-packed day for sure. and looking forward to sleeping in a mouse-free bed. i love all critters, creatures and animals - but the only one that i like to sleep with is jambaloney - bahahahahah! xoxo

  5. You will simply have to take my word for it: if they start multiplying around the house, they won't seem cute anymore.

    1. Russell, buddy - they are wild field mice and would do anything possible to stay away from humans and cats. and they multiply as Our Lord created them to do so - out in the fields! this is the first mouse that we have seen in or near the house in over a year.

back in the city, people had way more problems with mice and rodents.

oh and just between you and me - i don't believe for one second that there are 50 books out there that you haven't read. i don't believe you, buddy!

  7. PioneerP - ugh. where to start? i think i need to do a new post to explain our position on a few things. this mouse did not come into the house on his own. i don't think he would have ever voluntarily entered the house. he is a field mouse and he and his family are happily out there in the fields in the middle of the country probably living happy lives. we saved him and put him back where he belongs, although traumatized i am sure!

PioneerP buddy - we save every fly, gnat and any other insect that ends up in the house. we don't believe in killing anything unless it is to eat it.

  8. Kymber - Field mice will gladly enter your house along with any other place that offers food. Putting them back will only make them re-enter and do more destruction. They are vermin.

Your are free to do what you will whether I disagree or not nor am I judging you hon. Honestly I find someone who sets mice and other vermin free when I don't have to live with the repercussions entertaining :)

They are still vermin however :)

  9. Well maybe the mouse wanted an awesome night's sleep, on your bed!!

Oh I dislike mice...and tolerate indoor cats(litter box) so I do not have mice!!

So silly these post, how reality once we pull back...is silly and makes you laugh. Glad the mouse is gone and thanks for the laugh!

    ((hugs))

    1. bahahahahahah! oh Jen - that was funny! i am not a big fan of mice either. and our cats do most of their business outside which is a big help - i think it's because they have all the cat doors and go can go in and out freely. and ya - reality is pretty silly, eh?

oh Jen - i will send you an email for the large print Bible. thank you so much. my friend will soooo appreciate it!

much love to you honey! xox

  10. PioneerP - back in the city we had way more problems with mice than we do here. and i think city mice must be slower as barrel was catching them almost daily. this mouse is the first mouse that he has brought home since we moved here in dec 2010. we have not had any problems with mice at all here at the Manor. i think the area is big enough and less populated enough that the field mice don't care much for humans and stay away. plus we have the two cats and i think they stay away from them, too.

thanks for not judging, my friend, i appreciate that!
